Summary

I’m embarrassed, still, by how long it took me to notice。 Everything was right there in the open, right there in front of me, but it still took me so long to see the person I had married。

It took me so long to hate him。

Martine is a genetically cloned replica made from Evelyn Caldwell’s award-winning research。 She’s patient and gentle and obedient。 She’s everything Evelyn swore she’d never be。

And she’s having an affair with Evelyn’s husband。

Now, the cheating bastard is dead, and both Caldwell wives have a mess to clean up。

Good thing Evelyn Caldwell is used to getting her hands dirty。

I found this book intriguing。。。。

I really enjoyed The Echo Wife。 A lot of authors would have built an entire book around any one of the turns in this story and I appreciated that the story kept unfolding in unexpected ways。

Wow - this is a stunning book。 Incredibly weird but fascinating。 The foreshadowing is subtle and the end makes you want to know what happens next。 The science alone is worth the read。 Definitely want to check out more of her writing。

This book is utterly astounding。 I devoured it with trepidation as events unfolded。 The issues of cloning here may foretell the future for all mankind。 I marvel at the storytelling ability of this author and their deep character analysis。 This book is not for everyone because of its futuristic bent, but I found it fascinating。

Very different from what I expected。

Similar to her Magic for Liars, I was really interested in the premise and I felt like the world building was solid, but not much happened。 Would have worked better for me as a short story or a longer book。

In a world full of trendy domestic thrillers about what goes on behind closed doors, I was intrigued by the sci-fi slant of this book。 But, while the premise caught my attention, something failed to “click” with me。 On the plus side, Gailey weaves a satisfyingly haunting tone throughout the novel。 At its core, The Echo Wife is about identity and origins - it explores the idea of who we are, the factors that shape the people we become and our purpose on this earth。

4-ish *s。 This was a mostly slow roller,( Main character loved to dissect her feeeelings repeatedly, and the narrator's droning intonation didn't help。) , but interesting story with a few hiccups of energy, You had to go with the story and not wonder about the unexplained science parts that were left unexplained, I went with 4*s because it was different from my usual choices, I changed to 3 because it was repetitive, slow, had too much unexplained science even given the liberties of fiction, and 4-ish *s。 This was a mostly slow roller,( Main character loved to dissect her feeeelings repeatedly, and the narrator's droning intonation didn't help。) , but interesting story with a few hiccups of energy, You had to go with the story and not wonder about the unexplained science parts that were left unexplained, I went with 4*s because it was different from my usual choices, I changed to 3 because it was repetitive, slow, had too much unexplained science even given the liberties of fiction, and it could have been riveting。 。。。more

I finished this yesterday, but it took me a while to figure out how I felt about it。 First of all, I loved the premise。 Great concept, and for someone who doesn't read science fiction, like, ever, I really enjoyed that element。 It didn't really strike me as a thriller, though。 I found it soooo slow to start。 I kept getting bored, putting it down, and then picking it up again later simply because I've seen so many positive reviews and I was determined to keep going。 I'm glad I did, because it did I finished this yesterday, but it took me a while to figure out how I felt about it。 First of all, I loved the premise。 Great concept, and for someone who doesn't read science fiction, like, ever, I really enjoyed that element。 It didn't really strike me as a thriller, though。 I found it soooo slow to start。 I kept getting bored, putting it down, and then picking it up again later simply because I've seen so many positive reviews and I was determined to keep going。 I'm glad I did, because it did finally pick up around chapter 7 for me。 From that point on, I was engaged and it went quickly。 This book also contained some important themes。 I loved the powerful women in science element, and I like that patriarchy and female autonomy were explored。 There were also implied ethical issues, though I do wish the author had delved into those a bit more。 Overall I liked it, didn't love it, but would recommend it for the concept alone。 。。。more

This book presents what might go awry when cloning your spouse。 It’s short and readable, but the protagonist is super unlikable and frankly, I didn’t care what happened to her。

Just as my previous encounter with Sarah Gailey’s prose, I’m left smiling and stumped, yet entirely satisfied at the end of their latest book, The Echo Wife。 Gailey’s talent to create characters who are as enticing and relatable as they are flawed and genuinely-strange is unparalleled。 And I thoroughly enjoy not having any idea where the narrative will twist and turn into next, Gailey’s easy style expertly leading me along so gently that even the most outrageous development is perfectly rational Just as my previous encounter with Sarah Gailey’s prose, I’m left smiling and stumped, yet entirely satisfied at the end of their latest book, The Echo Wife。 Gailey’s talent to create characters who are as enticing and relatable as they are flawed and genuinely-strange is unparalleled。 And I thoroughly enjoy not having any idea where the narrative will twist and turn into next, Gailey’s easy style expertly leading me along so gently that even the most outrageous development is perfectly rational in the end。 Their stories are well-thought out and delightful, and I’m becoming a true fan。 This book was a joy from beginning to end。 Sincere gratitude to the author for this amazing adventure, and to my book club for introducing me to their works。 。。。more

Here’s a fresh new release for those who enjoy their domestic thrillers with a side of Sci-Fi: The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey。 Evelyn’s husband is having an affair with 。。。 wait for it 。。。 her CLONE, created from Evelyn’s own award-winning research。 I really appreciate Gailey's razor-sharp writing style, the way they've crafted an outlandish premise into an unsettlingly realistic read, and the deeper messages within this book about "abuse, grooming, and identity" (from the Acknowledgments)。 An ex Here’s a fresh new release for those who enjoy their domestic thrillers with a side of Sci-Fi: The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey。 Evelyn’s husband is having an affair with 。。。 wait for it 。。。 her CLONE, created from Evelyn’s own award-winning research。 I really appreciate Gailey's razor-sharp writing style, the way they've crafted an outlandish premise into an unsettlingly realistic read, and the deeper messages within this book about "abuse, grooming, and identity" (from the Acknowledgments)。 An excellent book to discuss, too! 。。。more

When I was too young and blue eyed some years ago, I had a boyfriend who during fights used to say "I wish I could make a clone of you who looked exactly like you but is nicer to me"。 Now, I don't think that I'm a non-nice person。 I guess it's just that sometimes people feel like having a Stepford Wife is a great thing。 There's a reason why exes are exes。Back to present time and here I am reading "The Echo Wife" which tells exactly that story of a guy who clones his wife to make her more docile, When I was too young and blue eyed some years ago, I had a boyfriend who during fights used to say "I wish I could make a clone of you who looked exactly like you but is nicer to me"。 Now, I don't think that I'm a non-nice person。 I guess it's just that sometimes people feel like having a Stepford Wife is a great thing。 There's a reason why exes are exes。Back to present time and here I am reading "The Echo Wife" which tells exactly that story of a guy who clones his wife to make her more docile, more homely, more how he thinks she ideally would behave! And I love it!Evelyn Caldwell is a brilliant geneticist specialized in cloning; she is celebrated in academic circles and admired by her team。 But privately life has dealt her a bad hand; her husband Nathan has not only done exactly what my ex wished he could do, secretly cloned a "better" version of her。 He also did this by stealing her own research material。While still trying to digest this betrayal, circumstances require her to team up with her own clone Martine, and Evelyn will need to seriously reconsider everything she thought she knew on clones and humans。First of all: I can't stress enough how much I loved the character Evelyn or any attempt from my part could ever live up to my actual sympathy! Maybe a little stuck up, but super strong, determined, edgy and subtly very funny。。。 When Nathan gave her the rather hurtful nickname "the hornet", she accepts and integrates it into her life as a symbol for herself; "[。。。] all I wanted to do was sting, sting, sting until he fell down swollen and dead。"For its small size, "The Echo Wife" covers an astonishingly wide range of seriously grave subjets, the central ones being first legal and ethic issues surrounding cloning and secondly, the consequences of domestic abuse。 I especially liked the fact that Gailey does not shake the moral finger at readers and just sort of raises issues, especially those concerning cloning, not pretending to answer questions who are basically unanswerable。The Echo Wife sags just a tiny little bit in the middle part but is, in the end, a super enjoyable, entertaining read with a good message。Favorite quote: "But I wasn't made of stone, I was just bones and fingernails and undrinkable water。"Thank you tor/pan macmillan for the gorgeous hardcover copy! 。。。more

I'd recommend you not to dive in this one for the plot, especially if you read a lot of thrillers。 This is more of a character study than a twists-and-turns mystery, The story revolves mostly around four characters and all of them are morally ambiguous at best, This books talks a lot about abuse and toxic masculinity with a side of questioning on personhood。 Really interesting overall and a slightly uncomfortable ending (I mean that in a good way ^^)。 I'd recommend you not to dive in this one for the plot, especially if you read a lot of thrillers。 This is more of a character study than a twists-and-turns mystery, The story revolves mostly around four characters and all of them are morally ambiguous at best, This books talks a lot about abuse and toxic masculinity with a side of questioning on personhood。 Really interesting overall and a slightly uncomfortable ending (I mean that in a good way ^^)。 。。。more

3。5?! Idk, the premise is so interesting。 The story itself is good, and I really enjoyed the idea of generational trauma in a clone story。 But I didn’t expect the story to be so introspective。

Dark and inventive, introspective and original, The Echo Wife is a dark marriage domestic thriller with a sci-fi twist and an added layer of feminist critique of traditional gender roles in heterosexual relationships。 As disturbing as some of the various twists and turns were, I absolutely loved this book。 2021 Reading Challenge Category: A genre hybrid。

I legitimately adored this book。 I don’t go for a lot of thrillers and while I like science fiction, cloning has always been very meh for me。 But this one was actually really engaging。 I’ve loved the style of Sarah Gailey’s writing since River of Teeth, and I think she’s really perfected her art here。 Evelyn’s voice was very clean, clinical to the point of detachment at times。 She acknowledges the moments where she shows no empathy, but does not apologize for it。 I was on the edge of my seat tow I legitimately adored this book。 I don’t go for a lot of thrillers and while I like science fiction, cloning has always been very meh for me。 But this one was actually really engaging。 I’ve loved the style of Sarah Gailey’s writing since River of Teeth, and I think she’s really perfected her art here。 Evelyn’s voice was very clean, clinical to the point of detachment at times。 She acknowledges the moments where she shows no empathy, but does not apologize for it。 I was on the edge of my seat towards the end of this, mostly because I desperately wanted things to work out for Martine。 I didn’t want her to experience new horrors at the hands of Evelyn, and I was incredibly, incredibly satisfied with how it ended。All in all, I think the only thing I had any qualms about were the few occasions where Evelyn and Martine didn’t consider the ramifications for certain actions that I perceived as no brainers。 But I mean, it’s also human to make mistakes, so eh? 。。。more

This is a great book in many ways! Evelyn feels like that brilliant but narcissistic scientist; her inner monologue was interesting and I loved how some aspects of the story felt circular。 Sarah Gailey's writing is always great。 But this got progressively more evil-scientist as it went on, which--as a researcher and ethics board member--is just too hard for me to read and suspend disbelief for the purpose of the beautifully crafted plot。 Research has more checks and balances then this。 This is a great book in many ways! Absolutely loved it! A complete gem!

The premise is amazing, but the execution left me underwhelmed。 They’re all unlikeable characters, which is normally fine with me, but the choices made didn’t seem to even make sense for the characters。 The ending is all sorts of messy and it’s basically not addressed?

alyssa

Very creepy! Hard to say if I “liked” it because of all the clones and murder and creepiness。 Very unique though。

I can totally understand that this story is not for everyone, but I devoured the book。 I like casual science fiction, so I’m not bothered by the “bad” science here。 I also enjoy all of the emotions and ethics presented throughout the prose。

I finished this last night and I can’t stop thinking about this book。 It’s so freaking weird and the plot and characters are all f*cked up, in the good way。 I can’t recommend this book enough。

Not my normal go-to genre and I still found myself reading it whenever I could。 A quick, easy read but don't let that fool you into thinking there's not depth。 This is the kind of book where after you're finished, the ideas that were stimulated。。。for lack of a better word。。。echo。 You find yourself thinking about who you are, what are the things that shaped you, how do you feel about who you've become。 Not my normal go-to genre and I still found myself reading it whenever I could。 A quick, easy read but don't let that fool you into thinking there's not depth。 This is the kind of book where after you're finished, the ideas that were stimulated。。。for lack of a better word。。。echo。 You find yourself thinking about who you are, what are the things that shaped you, how do you feel about who you've become。 。。。more

I can't really place this book, it should be creepy, but it's not。 It feels like a cautionary tale of what not to do, but it's not that either。 It starts with Evelyn finding out her husband is having an affair, but it's who the affair is with is the weird thing。I would say this book draws you in slowly, builds the plot until you want to stay up all night to see what happens。 The beginning and ending of this book will speak to you on a deeper level if you have family trauma, so sensitive readers I can't really place this book, it should be creepy, but it's not。 It feels like a cautionary tale of what not to do, but it's not that either。 It starts with Evelyn finding out her husband is having an affair, but it's who the affair is with is the weird thing。I would say this book draws you in slowly, builds the plot until you want to stay up all night to see what happens。 The beginning and ending of this book will speak to you on a deeper level if you have family trauma, so sensitive readers be aware。 But, it's a interesting story, I don't want to say it's horror or creepy, but it's deeply unsettling, something Gailey excels at! 。。。more

I think this is one of its type book that falls in a new genre of sci fi domestic noir。 The thrills are very rare, so it's not a thriller per say, the blurb is absolutely misleading this way。 This is a full character study of people in this book。 I personally liked the clone Martine so much and the rapport she shares with the main protagonist Evelyn。 Both the Caldwell wives show an amazing arc in terms of character progression。 Where Evelyn becomes much more mellowed and subtle by the end of the I think this is one of its type book that falls in a new genre of sci fi domestic noir。 The thrills are very rare, so it's not a thriller per say, the blurb is absolutely misleading this way。 This is a full character study of people in this book。 I personally liked the clone Martine so much and the rapport she shares with the main protagonist Evelyn。 Both the Caldwell wives show an amazing arc in terms of character progression。 Where Evelyn becomes much more mellowed and subtle by the end of the book, Martine evolves into a new independent person and pushes the boundry set by science for clones。 The process of cloning explained in the book is full of potholes but still elaborate。 You can grow a personal clone by the end of the book 😂。 One extra 🌟 for the novel story。 。。。more

I went into this one completely blind and I think that came back to bite me as I expected a book with “wife” in the title to be a complete domestic suspense novel。 However, what the reader is really given is a dose of sci-fi mixed with some suspense/thriller narrative。 The focus on cloning, ethics, and marital relationships is well done and I’m afraid it’s just my own reading preferences that couldn’t or didn’t fully allow me to enjoy this one。 I do feel like there should have been one more twis I went into this one completely blind and I think that came back to bite me as I expected a book with “wife” in the title to be a complete domestic suspense novel。 However, what the reader is really given is a dose of sci-fi mixed with some suspense/thriller narrative。 The focus on cloning, ethics, and marital relationships is well done and I’m afraid it’s just my own reading preferences that couldn’t or didn’t fully allow me to enjoy this one。 I do feel like there should have been one more twist of the knife at the end of the story, perhaps that would have increased my enjoyment。 Overall a worthwhile read for those who like to dabble in the science fiction genre。 。。。more
